Latinx Heritage Month

Today, we celebrate Sylvia Mendez’s bravery and resilience in the movement to desegregate the American public school system.  Sylvia was the first Mexican-American student to attend an all white school in California.  Her parents sued in the landmark case Mendez vs. Westminster and successfully helped desegregate schools in California.  Sylvia Mendez’s case would later pave the way for the famous Brown vs. Board of Education case which declared segregation in schools unconstitutional.
