Southeastern’s Drama Club Prepares for Spring Musical Production of the Addams Family

By: Traci Wheeler

Southeastern Regional’s Drama Club instructor, Kerri Cooper, has chosen The Addams Family, book adaptation by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa, for the spring 2017 production. Casting and rehearsals will begin shortly, but building the set and props has already begun by Southeastern’s MakerSpace team led by carpentry teacher Joe Markt and Superintendent Luis Lopes. In MakerSpace, students from a variety of vocational areas collaborate on projects, such as the “Tiny House” built last fall. Students from construction, plumbing, electricity, metal fabrication and even the advertising and design shop are all collaborating on building the set for the spring musical. In the MakerSpace at Southeastern, you will find two life-sized coffins and a scale model of the set for The Addams Family, which will be eight feet tall and pivot on balls like ball bearings.

Not many people over the age of twenty are unfamiliar with the Addams Family or the famous finger-snapping jingle from the 1960’s television series about the dark but kooky family of Gomez and Morticia Addams, which is exactly why Cooper says she chose The Addams Family. The name recognition will bring them in and the characters of this dark and macabre setting will keep them here. As it turns out, the story is warm and light-hearted. The musical is based on the television series as well as the comic books which were first printed in 1938 until American cartoonist Charles Addams’ death in 1988. Even younger audience members may remember the 1991 film adaptation of The Addams Family or the 1993 sequel to that, Addams Family Values.

The spring musical will take place on Mother’s Day weekend this year, May 10-13. Save the date to see Morticia, Gomez, Uncle Fester, Cousin Itt, Thing, and Wednesday Addams sing and dance their way into the Southeastern community on a Broadway-style set built by the Southeastern MakerSpace team.
